Day two of our 2 Days on 2 Wheels journey in Pittsburgh explores Oakland, a neighborhood full of universities, museums, shopping districts, and parks. With plenty of college students and multiple protected bike lanes, Oakland is a fantastic place to take a leisurely ride on two wheels while also taking in some knowledge.
Hall of Architecture is stunning.
The Carnegie Museum of Art, located in the same building as the Natural History Museum and the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, hosts a wide array of permanent and new exhibitions, including an impressive Hall of Architecture. Be sure to check out Teenie Harris’ collection of photography of Black life in Pittsburgh from the mid-20th century.
More beautiful architecture.
Just down the street from the CMOA via a contra-flow bike lane on Forbes Ave. is the Cathedral of Learning. You’ll see University of Pittsburgh students frequenting these hallowed halls of learning, as well as studying in the Cathedral’s beautiful Nationality Rooms. Then head across the street for a gourmet flatbread pizza at the Porch Cafe.
Ride across Schenley Plaza to the protected bike lane and hop off at Phipps Conservatory for a botanical bonanza of blooms. A feast for the eyes (and the stomach at the Phipps Cafe), you’ll be glad you stopped to smell the roses.
Jonathan Borofsky’s “Walking to the Sky” .
Heading back along the protected bike lane, take Forbes Ave. to end your ride at Carnegie Mellon University. CMU boasts a prestigious robotics institute, as well as a world-class drama program, with notable alumni such as Billy Porter, Ted Danson and Leslie Odom Jr.
Another cemetery, makes us think of Nola!
After taking in the university vibes, head towards Bloomfield via Morewood Ave and S Millvale Ave. Cruise around Friendship Ave til you reach Mathilda St and you’ve arrived at Allegheny Cemetery. Enjoy an easy downhill ride through the hills of this cemetery, while visiting some Pittsburgh residents from days gone by. You’ll end your second day on two wheels in the bustling neighborhood of Lawrenceville where you can grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants along Butler St.
