Located just 20min north of Moab, North Klondike Bluffs offer mountain bikers quick access to non-motorized trails with a little bit of everything. For a sub-two hour outing, check out Mega Steps and Alaska—two worthwhile loops that feature a mix of tech, flowy singletrack and sandstone riding surfaces. Of the two parking areas accessible from 191 use the north one for this ride, as the road into the parking area is smoother. First timers should know that there is no water at this trailhead.
Start by climbing up Mega Steps (turning right at the Mega Steps-Alaska junction) and, as the trail turns downhill, take your first right on N Baby Steps (clockwise). As the Baby Steps descent starts to bottom out, turn right and start heading back north on Dino Flows to rejoin Mega Steps (turn right). Get your second hit of climbing with another lap back up Mega Steps, this time take a left at the top of the climb and pedal the Alaska loop counter-clockwise. Alaska offers some of the best scenery in this area—big sweeping views spread out between some big boulders that frame in the trail. Enjoy the last—downhill—leg of Alaska back to the car.
There are plenty of other trails in this network if you have the time and inclination to link a bigger ride together. You can add another 40 miles if you have the water, fuel and daylight to do so. —Erik Proano PEARL iZUMi Crew
