Unlike previous years the route does NOT start from the bike shop in Freeport. The route starts in Pearl City at Joe Westwood Park 331 W. South St. There is a nice big safe parking lot with bathrooms, but whether or not they are open is questionable. There is a gas station in Pearl City if you need any last minute road food items.
The climbing starts right away. You hit the classics like Krise Rd and Morseville and then you'll make the split from the Ten Thousand at the Eden Rd / Rush Creek intersection and head into Stockton. You'll then be at the halfway point and there is a Casey's on route if you need to refuel. Once you leave Casey's you'll be working your way back to Pearl City through the Loran Valley. The tree lined roads and long views are really spectacular! The Slurp and Burp is a sign you're on the home stretch!
The route is mostly gravel with some really tough climbs and gnarly descents. I highly recommend taking plenty of calories and at least 3 water bottles. This course is unbelievably tough, it's critical you have the proper equipment, this is not a route you can willy nilly through.
Take lots of pictures, have fun, and be safe!
