A short drive and a short ride lead to a beautiful small town Memorial still growing and being developed. Here’s an update from the project chair Dianne Smith: “The NLC Veterans Memorial was established in 2015 to honor its rich military history and veterans, a dedicated group of local volunteers is working to fully complete the NLC Memorial by 2020. The memorial is located at Bushong, KS population 134, which has lost more men per capita than perhaps any community in Kansas. Upon completion of the memorial, the volunteer team will proceed to phase two, a Memorial Garden Wall honoring the ten men who died in WWII. There faces will forever be placed in an old stone wall window. After completion of the NLC VM and the Memorial Garden Wall, the NLCVM team will continue work on the NLCVM Museum which was once an old stone built bank. This museum will honor all of North Lyon County’s rich military history and veterans. Individuals wishing to support this memorial, wall, and museum can send check donations to the Emporia Community Foundation attn: Kansasland Bank Fund. Check should be made payable to the NLCVM and are tax deductible. The organization president is Dianne R. Smith, Bushong, KS. You begin and end your ride in Admire, Kansas at the Rails to Trails access point.
